From 3rd to 5th September 2020, the international enduro mountain bike scene met in Davos, Switzerland, for the already 4th edition of the MONDRAKER ENDURO TEAM, a race for teams with an extremely high fun factor. At best conditions with lots of sunshine and great mountain panoramas, the 450 riders enjoyed the alpine racing adventure on the first-class trails around the destination of Davos Klosters and the extraordinary camaraderie within the international mountain bike community. The teams of two in particular had an exciting competition, but the completely new, open fun category for teams of three to six people with an even greater focus on fun also proved its worth.
Three days of pure sunshine, first class trails and best mountain panoramas – the event and the Davos Klosters region were once again very well received by the international participants: "The trails are absolutely amazing and endless. I have never ridden such long stages in a race before", says a professional mountain biker from England, who is in Davos for the first time. "The event atmosphere is simply unique, super loyal and riding a race as a team is a particularly great experience!” This was the unanimous feedback of nearly all the 450 riders from 17 nations, who have covered 9 timed stages on their bikes in the last three days. On the transfer stages in between, often supported by mountain railways, the clock was stopped and the riders had time to chat with participants from foreign countries and enjoy the international mountain bike community and the impressive alpine scenery of the Grisons mountains. In short – a lot of mountain bike fun!
Successful premiere for category FUN TEAM
The new open category FUN TEAM for teams of 3 to 6 people has proven particularly successful. Some 130 riders in nearly 30 varied teams appreciated and enjoyed the opportunity to start as a bigger group in this totally fun category, than just in a team of two: "Fun with our bike buddies is the most important thing for us, plus the relaxed event atmosphere – the FUN TEAM category is simply phenomenal", a team of 6 comments enthusiastically. Next to this, the fast teams of two put up a tough competition, at least on the track. "We always have ambitious riders with us, who go full gas as soon as they have a starting number on the handlebar," says organiser Britta Wild. "This year, however, due to Corona-related race cancellations, quite a few top riders have joined us at short notice, who normally compete in races like the Enduro World Series or the Downhill World Cup. Therefore, the level was extremely high this year.
Favourites came out on top
In the Men’s category, Gusti Wildhaber and Tim Bratschi, team Cube Bikes / Bold Bikes / Davos Klosters, lived up to their role as favourites and took the win with 58min 43sec, nearly two minutes ahead of Stefan Peter and Mirco Widmer of team BIXS Family. Team Gravity Union with Jonas Bernet and Mike Schuler finished 3rd.
In the 77+ category of the older riders, team ä Tschifälär und ä Rissäckler with Philipp Buchs and Marco Odermatt took the victory. 2nd place went to last year's winners, the Tanner Twins Jürg and Markus Tanner, 3rd place to team Brino with Roni Amstutz and Patrick Matt.
In the Mixed category, team MTB-News.de with Jakob Breitwieser and Tanja Naber won the race. Fiona Kälin and Roman Schuler from team velotrend.ch finished second. Alessandra Keller, cross-country U23 World Champion of 2018, became third in her very first Enduro race, together with her mechanic Gavin Black, and says: "The event was extremely fun and was a great downhill training. And Gavin also finally got to know the cool trails nearly on his doorstep!
In the women's category, this year the Flitzchicks Daniela Michel and Anja Rohrer finally won, with 1h 19min 16sec. Second again were the sisters Ramona and Jennifer Kupferschmied, Team Swiss MTB Girls powered by STOLL. Third place went to Jeannette Mayr and Berit Diel from Team Fusion-world.ch.
In the new category FUN TEAMS, The Village People proved that not only small groups have a chance – the team of 5 brilliantly won the premiere. Second place went to the 3-persons-team Flying Hamster from France, the 4-men-crew One80 GRG took third place.
Despite some close battles on the trails, everyone agrees: In this fun team event winning is secondary – because the main prize in this race, a big grin on their face, can be won by everyone.
Conclusion: Fantastic mountain bike festival despite Corona
The organising committee draws a completely positive conclusion: "Our goal was to show experienced mountain bikers the most beautiful trails of the Davos Klosters destination," summarises race director Michi Wild. "We succeeded in doing this again this time, despite some restrictions due to Corona and partial compulsory masking. It was again a fantastic mountain bike festival!" Considering the current situation, the OC sees itself as lucky that the event could be held at all. "Our experienced and flexible team was able to implement the necessary adjustments at very short notice. Plus, the Davos Klosters mountain railways, which make the event possible thanks to their transportation network, also gave us great support again!” A big thank you also goes to the 60 volunteers, without whom the event could not have taken place.
